A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE TO A BEAUTIFUL MAN, TEACHER, COACH, MENTOR & HUMAN BEING

To Coach Jim Welsh:

I wish to publicly thank you, and memorialize the wonderful inspirational teacher, mentor, and human being that you were! Thank you Coach!

“Coach Welsh was our football lineman coach for 3 years. I can still hear his whistle, which he kept strung around his neck as he rode the 7 man blocking sled on the practice field. I often prayed that he would blow it a little earlier than he did. (and I’m sure my teammates would concur). When the whistle sound finally came, it was followed by “Man”, a brief head shake , and then “Guys, you have to push harder. Do it again!’ Everyone was happy when he drove the bus back to school…

Coach Welsh was the wrestling coach, the track weight coach and also my Home-Economics teacher during Junior year. A good teacher: he taught with everyday-life examples, and led his class with a stern demeanor (intermittently punctuated with a really big belly laugh). Don’t recall my grade, but he was fair.

A large man physically, Coach was also large morally: Ethical, firm -yet always kind and compassionate to all; he disciplined us in the original “teaching”sense.

He also knew how to laugh and have fun: coach’s laughter shook the gymnasium rafters, as he shot and made his patented half-court "hook-shots" during our Charity Student vs Faculty basketball game. Despite us having Michael Drummond, Coach’s team won.

Bigger than life, bigger than death, Coach was a real-life teacher, role model and mentor— and not just to me and my teammates but to countless others of his students and team members at St Catherine’s.

So, Coach Welsh, thank you for everything!

And lastly a large thank you to Marie and his entire family who so generously shared him with us - his linemen and students - for all those countless hours.

Coach, With gratitude forever,

Tim Patrick-Miller SCHS ‘74

And teammates
