Trip Down Memory Lane............The Good Old Days
April 1969, Jim Chones '69 signed a "Letter of Intent" for Marquette University to play basketball and as they say, the rest is history.........led Marquette to NCAA Tourney - in 1973 Jim signed a pro contract with the Ney York Nets (ABA) and became the 1st Million Dollar in - was an NBA Champion with the Los Angels Lakers.
Young Jim with his mom and Coach John McGuire

In 1969, the great Jim Chones ended one of the fiercest recruiting battles ever staged for a Wisconsin athlete when he announced that he would be attending Marquette University the following fall to play for Al McGuire.
After being named the UPI National Player of the Year and leading Racine St. Catherine’s High School to a record of 26-0, Chones had been pursued by some 200 colleges before eventually narrowing his list of candidates to three: Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Marquette.
The 6’11” Chones cited academics and Marquette’s proximity to his family and ailing father in Racine as the primary factors in his decision.
"That's my first objective in going to school," said Chones. “To get an education."
“In all my years in basketball, I can think of only a few men his size who had his mobility,” declared a delighted Al after Chones' announcement. “Lew Alcindor was one, and Bill Russell, although I didn't see Russell in high school."
Regarding his plans for utilizing the talented Chones, Al, of course, thought of defense first, remarking, "I've never had a big man, a really good big man, in all my years of coaching. Our play will have to be changed, but this opens a whole new world of defense for me. Things I have in the back of my mind that you can never try unless you have a man like this. For instance, he's a one-man zone. With him in the middle, the opposition can never count on anything better than a 15-foot jump shot."
"It's another world," Al marveled.
Indeed, Chones' impact on both ends of the floor would be immediate and dramatic.
During Chones’ first year on varsity, he would average 17.9 points and 11.4 rebounds per game while shooting 57% from the field and anchoring a Warrior defense that would hold opponents to just 62.7 points per contest, the second lowest total in the nation.
With the sophomore Chones at center, Marquette would go 27-0 to become just the thirteenth team in NCAA history to finish the regular season undefeated.
During Chones' time at Marquette, Al's Warriors would go 49-1, winning 98% of their games and never losing a regular season contest.
Not a bad signing.

Prayers for Alumni & Friends dealing with Health Issues:
Chris Gorman '77 Ankle Saga-------
Not sure if you heard our news from Mayo Clinic concerning Chris’s ankle consultation. No options were good.
Nothing has been decided yet as we will take our time in prayer to ask for wisdom and guidance.
Chris has 4 options:
1. Live with it — but it will continue to get worse, more unstable, and more painful. We don’t know the timeline how soon this will happen. It may also eliminate option 2 and 3 completely.
2. Total ankle replacement — about a 20% chance of success.
3. Total ankle fusion — about a 50–60% chance of success, very complex surgery with a long recovery.
4. Amputation — offers the best chance for improved mobility and quality of life.
We are going to go with option 1 for awhile.
